As you have now completed the introductory part of this tutorial,
I have no doubt that you are now ready and prepared to go further into something more interesting and trust me, Excel is much more easy than you thought.
In this lesson, we shall be looking at basic terms and uses of Microsoft excel and how to perform series of calculations - just basic tools you may require while using an Excel spreadsheet application for now.
Lesson Objectives
At the end of this lesson the reader should be;
Excel Formulas
The Basics of Excel Formulas
What are Excel formulas?
Excel formulas may be described as a way of giving a set of commands to excel Cell(s) in order to perform a particular function in an excel worksheet. This function of Excel is what makes it the best Spreadsheet application ever, as virtually everything and anything you can think about is possible - to the tune of you defining your personal formulas (UDF) - this is what interest me most about Excel, just like building up a robot and programming it to perform a particular task, all what is required is just a one time setup and oops! the robot keep performing the task seamlessly. Do not worry you would soon start making up your own formulas on Excel.
Our focus for now is looking at the basics of Excel formulas and gradually integrate into slightly complex formulas and functions.

Functions (fx)
A function may be define as a single predefined formula and Excel has over 300 of such built-in Functions installed by default which are divided into ten categories:
Financial, Date & Time, Math & Trig, Statistical, Lookup & Reference, Database, Text, Logical etc. to see all the functions open an excel workbook, on the formula bar click on “fx” then open up the category box.
Most times, we might have to combine more than one Excel functions in order to create a particular formula, don’t be scared about the length of the characters, you can perfect and design much shorter forms later. I have found this technique very useful and it works for me, always have a schematics of what formula you want to build and follow the simple steps I shall be discussing below.
For example we might use the IFERROR, IF, SUM and the COUNT function together in the same cell to create a single formula.

Simple rules to creating a Formula and Function
- All Formulas And Functions Must Begin With A = (Equal Sign)
- A Plus (+) minus (-) or Macintosh ({}) may also be used to some formulas
- For every open parenthesis (brackets) there must be a closing Parenthesis.
